Introduced to the plastics industry more than 50 years ago, hot runner technology has revolutionized injection molding processing capabilities by improving molded part quality, improving operational efficiency, reducing scrap and saving money.
What is a hot runner A hot runner system is a molten plastic conveying device used in an injection mold. In other words, a hot runner system consists of a heating component (usually electrically) used inside a plastic injection mold that brings molten plastic from the injection molding machine barrel into the mold cavity. The size of the hot runner melt channel depends on many factors such as resin type, injection speed, fill rate, and molded part. A temperature controller (either a standalone controller or a controller from an injection molding machine) heats the hot runner system in the injection mold and the resin in the barrel to processing temperature and injects the resin into the mold. The resin passes through the inlet, down into the manifold, and then diverts to individual nozzles and through the injection point (or gate) into the final mold cavity, where the final part is formed. Today’s molds can have anywhere from 1 to more than 192 nozzles, depending on the plastic part being made.
