Plastic mold making is a complex and delicate process that involves multiple steps and multiple technologies. The core of this process is to convert the design drawings of plastic products into actual usable molds, and then to produce plastic products that meet the requirements through the molds.

The first step in plastic mold making is usually to accept the task book. The task book is proposed by the part designer and includes the formal part drawings that have been reviewed and signed, the plastic part instructions or technical requirements, production output, and plastic part samples. The mold designer designs the mold based on these materials and collects and organizes information on part design, molding process, molding equipment, mechanical processing and special processing for use in mold design.

At the design stage, mold designers need to digest the plastic part drawings, understand the purpose of the parts, and analyze the technical requirements of the plastic parts, such as processability and dimensional accuracy. At the same time, they also need to digest the process data and analyze whether the requirements such as molding method, equipment model, material specification and mold structure type are appropriate. These analyses help determine the ideal mold structure to meet the process engineering and production economics requirements of plastic parts.

Once the design is complete, the next step is the mold manufacturing process. This includes steps such as cavity layout, parting line determination, pouring and venting system determination, ejection method selection, and cooling and heating method determination. These steps require precise calculation and careful design to ensure that the mold can smoothly produce plastic products that meet the requirements.

A variety of machine tools and processing technologies are used in the mold manufacturing process. For example, milling machines are used to machine the shape and cavity of the mold; drilling machines are used for drilling and tapping; grinding machines are used to grind the mold surface to improve the finish; CNC milling machines and precision engraving machines are used to machine complex curved surfaces and high-precision parts. In addition, special machining equipment such as spark machines and wire EDM are used to machine blind holes, deep grooves and other parts of the mold that are difficult to machine using traditional methods.

After the mold is manufactured, it is necessary to test and debug the mold. Mold testing is an important link to verify that the mold is qualified. Through mold testing, problems with the mold can be found and necessary adjustments and trimming can be made. After debugging is completed, the mold can be officially put into production.

Plastic mold manufacturing is a highly specialized process that requires mold designers, manufacturers and technicians to work closely together to ensure the quality and performance of the mold. Through precise design and fine manufacturing, plastic molds can produce plastic products of various shapes, sizes and functions to meet the various needs of people’s lives and production.
