Important Factors in Mold Design and Maintenance
Manufacturers spend as much on tooling as you do on a performance car. The difference is that you can drive the car and your mold maker can “drive” your mold. Then let’s talk about mold design together.
In a plastics manufacturing environment, consistent quality parts start with high-quality, well-made and well-maintained molds. This process should include physical mold design and high quality tool construction. Once the molds are in place and ready to go with your molding machine, what should you expect from your investment?
Understand the basics of mold maintenance:
injection molding
It is important for manufacturers to have a basic understanding of the cleaning and maintenance required for proper tool maintenance. To keep tools in top working condition, maintenance is necessary not only when problems arise, but also periodically over time.
Generally speaking, the condition of the injection mold will affect the quality of the plastic parts produced. Molds and tooling are important assets for your company, yet many manufacturers ignore maintenance requirements when deciding which injection molding machine to choose. How your supplier maintains your tooling can be a key factor in a successful and long-term relationship.
As with any maintenance program, certain inspections and procedures should be performed on a regular basis. For example, mold cavities and gates should be inspected for wear or damage. The spray system should be inspected and lubricated, and all surfaces should be cleaned with a non-toxic solvent to remove dirt and sprayed with a rust inhibitor. In addition, all water lines should be flushed and drained to remove excess water.
Molds should also be properly maintained and inspected prior to storage, including:
Separation of all plates
Injection systems should be cleaned and lubricated.
Replace or repair parts including bushings and springs, worn bushings or guide pins.
Once these preservation strategies are in place, the mold can be quickly and easily put into service.
Understanding Die Negligence Issues:
What Happens When Your Injection Molding Machine Ignores Your Mold? Over time, the molding process can cause severe wear and tear. Without a proper preventive maintenance program, material can build up on mold surfaces, eventually leading to tool sinking, flashing and other part defects.
Unfortunately, some molders wait until there are part quality issues or tool damage to perform maintenance. Waiting until this time to make repairs may result in increased expenses, supply/stock issues and longer time to market. However, when molders have defined maintenance procedures, production time and overall costs can actually be reduced.
Tooling is a significant investment for any manufacturer, and extending tool life requires a mutually agreed-upon collaboration, communication and maintenance plan.
Our injection molding simulations have the typical content you would expect in a simulation workflow; animated results, probing data values, the ability to compare different designs or manufacturing options, and the ability to zoom in on deformations. Also benefit from other powerful features like version control and concurrency, making it easy to collaborate with team members who may continue to improve your designs.
